Men commonly possess enlarged facial pores. According to a study published in a 2006 issue of the British Journal of Dermatology, men are more likely to have large pores than women. Increased sebum output, or oily skin, is the No. 1 indicator or cause of enlarged pores in both men and women. However, the presence of oily skin and acne leads to the development of large pores in men moreso than it does in women. There are several approaches men can consider to reduce the size of their facial pores.
Step 1
Cleanse your skin every morning and night with a gentle, oil-free facial cleanser formulated for oily or acne-prone skin.
Step 2
Use a topical retinoid daily to stimulate collagen production.
Step 3
Apply a pore-reducing moisturizer after each cleansing session to reduce the size of pores and absorb excess oil. Apply moisturizer as necessary throughout the day to control excess oil.
Step 4
Scrub your face with a gentle facial scrub twice a week to remove blackheads, pimples and dead skin.
Step 5
Apply a clay-based mask to your T-zone once a week. The T-zone includes the acne-prone skin found on your forehead, nose and chin.
Tips and Warnings
- Avoid touching your skin with your fingers as this will increase the oiliness of your skin. If your hair is oily, keep it cut short so it does not lay on your face.
- If you have large pores, you should avoid cosmetic procedures such as skin resurfacing and chemical peels, as these remove the top layers of skin, causing pores to appear even larger.
