Cold sores are cause by the herpes simplex 1 virus which tends to be dormant in the cells of the mouth until an eruption occurs and manifest as a cold sore. It is characterized by a flareup that leads to painful sores and blisters around the mouth and lips. A flareup can be triggered by a poor immune system. Although herbs from Traditional Chinese Medicine may help treat cold sores, sufferers should consult a doctor before using any alternative medicinal treatments.
Reishi and Astragalus
According to Chinese-Herbs.org, reishi is a mushroom that has been used throughout Asian cultures as a medicine to strengthen the immune system. Reishi is thought to inhibit the spread of the herpes virus which causes cold sores. Reishi is available as a supplement in pill or powdered form. A dose of 600 mg should be taken one or two times a day. Reishi has typically been taken with another herb called astragalus. This herb improves immune functioning as well. Together, these two substances may help treat the symptoms of cold sores and reduce the number of future outbreaks. Reishi may delay blood clotting, so it is important to consult a doctor if medications such as aspirin or warfarin are also taken.
Prunella Vulgaris
Prunella vulgaris is a perennial plant found mostly in China and Europe, and is traditionally used to treat mouth and throat sores. According to a BBC News article, the plant extract from Prunella vulgaris, a lignin carbohydrate compound, shows promise and responses that are different from the action of the antiherpes drug acyclovir. The herb's extracts may be effective in treating both herpes simplex 1 and 2. It is thought to combat the acyclovir-resistant strains of the herpes virus that can cause cold sores.
Indigo
According to Mississippi Baptist Health Systems, the indigo plant has shown significant activity in fighting against fungi and bacteria. It is a natural remedy used commonly in China in a powdered form. The powdered indigo can be mixed with cold water and then boiled. It can then be applied directly to the cold sore.
