Many people with curly or wavy hair love to straighten their hair into a gleaming, straight, shiny mane. It adds length to the hair and often reduces frizz. If you love to straighten your hair, save it for special occasions or just for the weekends, as it can be damaging to your hair. Damage is caused by the heat applied to the hair shaft. There are several things you can do while straightening your hair that can help avoid excess damage and add volume to your straight style.

Step 1

Shampoo and condition your hair as usual. Apply a small amount of conditioner to the ends of your hair, without rinsing it out, to avoid frizz and split ends. Towel dry your hair and comb through to remove tangles.

Step 2

Spray a generous amount of heat protection hair spray into your hair. Comb through to coat each strand evenly.

Step 3

Hang your head upside down and begin to blow dry. Focus on the roots as drying your hair in this position will increase volume. Blow dry until your hair is 90 percent dry. Plug in the hair straightener so it warms up while you blow dry.

Step 4

Clip your hair up into a pile on the top of your head. Pull the bottom layer of hair from the clip. Place a 1-inch section of hair in between the straightener's plates, near your scalp. Pull the straightener through your hair, moving slowly and evenly towards the tips. After you straighten the bottom layer of hair, pull another layer from the clips to straighten. Repeat until you have straightened your entire head of hair.

Step 5

Apply a small dab of frizz control lotion to your hair, concentrating on the ends of your hair. You can reapply the lotion when necessary.
