Nursing homes are residential facilities that provide 24-hour skilled nursing care for the elderly and disabled. Nursing homes also provide short-term rehab care for post-surgical patients and respite services for those caring for frail or disabled persons at home. Bohemia, New York, is home to one senior living facility, but several others that offer full nursing care lie within a ten-mile radius.

Facilities

Nursing homes near Bohemia with the highest overall Medicare and user ratings include Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Sayville, Island Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Holtsville, Nesconset Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation in Nesconset and Smithtown Center for Rehab & Nursing Care in Smithtown. All offer full nursing care, although some feature additional care options such as short-term respite and post-surgery rehabilitation. These facilities are all located near area hospitals.

Ratings

According to UCompareHealthCare, a company that compares independent ratings for health care, Good Samaritan was given four out of five stars overall, which is the highest rating of the four nursing homes near Bohemia. Each of the others received three stars. Overall ratings average together the health inspection, staffing and quality measures ratings. For below-average ratings, Smithtown Center was given two stars for staffing, which measures trained nurses and staff per resident. Island Nursing received only one star for quality measure ratings, an average of how well the home performs ten aspects of care, such as dressing and eating or treating pressure sores--while Smithtown Center received two stars. Good Samaritan was the only home of the four to receive above-average ratings for the health inspection; the other three were each rated average.

On-Site Services

All four nursing homes offer the following services on-site: dental, housekeeping, mental health, nursing, occupational therapy, pharmacy, physical therapy, physician, podiatry, social work and speech and language pathology. All offer recreational activities except Island Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. All offer clinical lab service except Smithtown Center. Good Samaritan is the one of four that does not provide physician extender services, and Smithtown is the one of four without x-ray capabilities.

Special Care

All four nursing homes offer assistance with bathing, grooming, dressing, eating, catheter management, foot care, sitting, standing, walking, toileting and medication management. Island Nursing and Good Samaritan are equipped to handle patients with colostomies or urostomies. Nesconset Center offers support for a large variety of special conditions, such as cancer, emphysema, diabetes, broken bones, immune deficiency, stroke, heart disease and others. Smithtown Center does not specify any special conditions for which they provide care.

Costs

Because they provide the highest levels of care, nursing homes are the highest-cost option for assisted living. As a church-run, nonprofit organization, only Good Samaritan publishes its fee for nursing care, which starts at $12,300 per month as of 2010. Good Samaritan accepts Medicare and Medicaid, but does not take VA benefits or long-term care insurance. Nesconset Center accepts Medicare and Medicaid as well as long-term care insurance, while Island Nursing and Smithtown Center take only Medicare and Medicaid. Most people use a combination of resources to cover the cost of nursing home care. It is wise to seek the advice of a lawyer or specialist in eldercare financial planning when determining payment options.
