Many patients with cancer will have to undergo chemotherapy to destroy the fast-developing cancer cells. Unfortunately, chemotherapy also destroys other fast-growing cells, such as your hair follicles, bone marrow and cells in your immune system that fight off infections and illnesses. When chemotherapy destroys your immune system, you will not be able to fight off illnesses and infections as well. By making changes to your diet and lifestyle, you can help keep your immune system healthier.
Step 1
Exercise. According to BreastCancer.org, a small study of women who were undergoing breast cancer treatment and who participated in moderate exercise three times a week found that their immune cell count was back to normal. Exercising releases endorphins that can improve your mood and help reduce stress.
Step 2
Visit a support group for people with cancer. Talking with others will help reduce stress. High stress levels or chronic stress can weaken your immune system, says BreastCancer.org. Ask friends and family for help with things that are causing stress. Having people cook meals, clean your house or do yard work can take the burden off you and help relieve stress.
Step 3
Clean your skin. Your skin is the first line of protection against germs and bacteria that can cause infections and illnesses. According to Everyday Health, some important steps in keeping your skin clean include washing your hands before eating, after using the bathroom and throughout the day with soap and warm water for 20 seconds. If you have to change a baby's diaper or change a cat's litter box, wear gloves to protect you. Take a bath or shower every day with soap and warm water and use a towel to pat your skin dry.
Step 4
Eat healthy foods. Good nutrition can go a long way in helping your immune system stay healthy. According to AskDrSears.com, there are nutrients that can help boost your immune system. These nutrients include vitamin C and E, beta carotene, zinc, garlic and omega-3 fatty acids. These nutrients can be found in fruits, vegetables, fatty fish and through supplements. It is preferable to get your vitamins through foods, but a multivitamin can help fill in nutritional gaps. Talk with your doctor before taking any supplements or vitamins.
