Hiking is a good source of exercise and a way to experience your area in a new way. The National Hiking Association's research shows hiking can better your health in a number of ways. Hiking can play a role in preventing heart disease, losing excess pounds, improving arthritis, and other health benefits. Hiking is a low impact activity that can vary in its level of difficulty and is good for all age groups. There are several local hiking clubs in Southern Indiana that allow people to join and enjoy the outdoors.

Pick A Club

There are six recognized hiking clubs in the southern region of Indiana: The Indianapolis Hiking Club, the Bloomington Hiking Club, the Bedford Hiking Club, River City Ramblers in Evansville, Columbus Wellness Walkers, and Southern Indiana Hiking Club. Additionally, there are statewide organizations dedicated to hiking and outdoor activities such as the Hoosiers Hikers Council and Hoosier Chapter Sierra Club.

A list of the state's hiking organizations can be found by visiting the Indiana Department of Natural Resources website as well as The American Volksport Association website. There are links to both in the Resources section.

Activities

According to some of the clubs' websites, members meet at least once a week to participate in a group hike or walk. Different clubs take part in different types of hiking.

These clubs offer an opportunity to enjoy the outdoors and meet new people. Some clubs have social events such as dinner for members in addition to group hikes. For example, in October the Indianapolis Hiking Club will be having an "Octoberfest," a fall day of hiking followed by a picnic lunch.

Time Frame

Club hikes vary in length and difficulty. The Bloomington club hikes between eight and 15 miles on Saturdays. No clubs have a required amount of time that members must commit each week. As hikes vary, the time frame of each hike will differ accordingly. A minimum of two hours is typically needed for a shorter hike.

Background

Many of the clubs are part of he American Volksport Association, or AVA. President of the Bedford Hiking Club Jim Mount says AVA is an international organization that has 5K and 10K walks throughout the United States and in other parts of the world. AVA has clubs throughout the United States and several in Indiana

Cost

All clubs allow people to join their walks and hikes for free. However, some have annual member dues to support the organization and cover costs accrued throughout the year. Dues are minimal, ranging near $5 per member.
