Overview

Cetaphil cleansers have become a staple on the drugstore shelf. Since the early 1960s, Cetaphil's parent company, Galderma, has been in the business of dermatology, having patented popular trade name medications to treat acne, such as Differin and Clindagel. Cetaphil products come with high commendations from dermatologists, the Skin Cancer Foundation, and print publications like Allure, Cosmopolitan and Women's Health. Although the brand has expanded to include cleansers for different skin care needs, as well as a line of creams and moisturizers, when it comes to use, the Cetaphil name largely continues to be associated with one thing: care for acne-prone skin.

Step 1

Select a Cetaphil cleanser appropriate for your needs. Cetaphil Daily Facial Cleanser is appropriate for those with normal, oily or combination skin types. Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser may work better for those with acne, especially when a potentially-drying topical medication is used.

Step 2

Cleanse your face at least twice daily, advises the American Academy of Dermatology. Using lukewarm water and a small amount of Cetaphil cleanser, wash your face with your fingertips only. While it might sound logical that you should scrub oil away with a washcloth or puff, the AAD warns that this can exacerbate oil production in your skin. Blot your face dry gently with a towel.

Step 3

Wait before applying a prescription topical acne treatment to the skin. The AAD notes that freshly-washed skin is highly absorbent. To avoid irritation associated with acne medication, wait five to 15 minutes before applying them.

Step 4

Apply Cetaphil Daily Facial Moisturizer SPF 15 or Cetaphil UVA/UVB Defense SPF 50 (both are non-comedogenic) before you go outdoors--these may be particularly helpful if you've been prescribed a topical retinoid, such as popular tretinoins Retin-A cream or Retin-A Micro, which leave skin more susceptible to sunburn. The American Society of Dermatologic Surgery notes that those who use topical retinoids should wear a sunscreen containing SPF 15 or higher.

Tips and Warnings

  • Cetaphil products can be purchased at most drugstores, pharmacies and grocery stores. Cetaphil uses no masking fragrances the majority of its products. All Cetaphil products are non-comedogenic.
