Colonic irrigation, also known as colon hydrotherapy, is a method of cleansing the colon using slightly pressurized irrigation. According to the Southwest Naturopathic Medical Center, colonic irrigation softens waste, allowing it to be eliminated with ease. It also helps increase muscle tone in the bowel and helps nutrients to be absorbed more easily. Healthcare practitioners have mixed opinions regarding the benefits and safety of colonic irrigation. Like any medical procedure, side effects are possible when having this procedure. To lessen these risks, patients should seek out a well-trained and knowledgeable provider.
Electrolyte Imbalance
Patients who have colonic irrigation performed too frequently may experience an electrolyte imbalance, because too much water may be absorbed into the patient's system, explains the NetWellness website. An electrolyte imbalance may cause a wide range of problems, including abnormal heart rhythms, nausea, vomiting and even a coma.
Bowel Perforation
If not performed correctly, a colonic irrigation may cause a perforation, or tear, in the bowel wall. Johns Hopkins Medicine Health Alerts explains that during a colonic irrigation, rubber tubing is inserted into the rectum. If not inserted properly, the tubing may damage or perforate the bowel. A perforation may also occur if the pressure of the irrigation is not properly monitored, allowing for the irrigation fluids to flow in with too much pressure.
Infection
Colonic irrigation may result in infection, especially if the equipment used for the procedure isn't sterilized prior to use. Equipment that hasn't been properly sterilized in between patients can transmit bacteria. Infections may also occur secondary to a bowel perforation, and in these cases, the infections may become quite serious and even life threatening if not treated immediately.
Allergic Reactions
Allergic reactions are possible during colonic irrigation, especially if herbs or other solutions are added to the irrigation solution. It's also possible for a patient to experience an allergic reaction related to the material of the tubing used to perform the irrigation.
