Cross-country ski boots frequently come in European sizes, which may be confusing to someone who is used to seeing U.S. shoe sizes. A European shoe size is based on the last length. A last is a foot-shaped mount upon which cobblers used to make shoes. The size of the last determined the size of the shoe. As most Americans do not know their shoes' last length, cross-country skiers should use a conversion chart to help find the correct boot size.

Step 1

Examine a comfortable pair of shoes you own for its size. You can generally find size information on the shoe's tongue or sole. If you cannot find this information on any of your shoes, enlist the aid of a shoe store employee to measure your foot and determine your appropriate size.

Step 2

Find your shoe size on a conversion chart. U.S. shoe sizes are different for men, women and children, so ensure you use the correct chart and the correct row.

Step 3

Find the corresponding European size for your American size. European sizes do not distinguish among men, women and children.

Step 4

Wear the socks you plan to wear while skiing to try on the ski boots. Sock size and thickness can have a considerable effect on the comfort of a ski boot, so wearing your socks to the shop will help you find an appropriately sized boot.

Tips and Warnings

  • If you plan to wear much thicker socks in your cross-country skis than you typically wear in your shoes, add about half a size to your shoe size before converting. This will provide extra space in the boot for your thicker socks. Always try on the ski boot before purchasing it. Each manufacturer--including the ones that made your U.S.-sized shoe and your European-sized ski boot--will differ slightly in sizing. Trying on the ski boot is the only way to know whether the boot fits appropriately and comfortably.
