The liver is the most important organ of the human body's internal detox system, according to Dr. Sandra Cabot. Its role is to break down and excrete toxic substances such as alcohol, drugs and chemicals found in the environment. The liver has many other functions that include the production of bile to digest proteins and fats. It stores and releases glucose for energy. The liver also cleans and filters the bloodstream. It is vital to eat certain healthy foods to detoxify the liver so that it can perform its many functions.

Apples

Apples contain both insoluble and soluble fiber. Not only does fiber lower cholesterol levels but it also forces the liver to produce more bile. Fiber binds to the bile acids in the gut which helps eliminate toxins in the liver. Other fiber-rich foods that help detoxify the liver are broccoli, turnip greens, kale, cauliflower and cabbage.

Pumpkin Seeds

Pumpkin seeds are known to fight off parasites in the digestive tract and help cleanse the liver of toxins. The seeds also contain powerful antioxidants that are released in the blood to help fight oxidative damage while at the same time protecting the liver.

Radishes

Radishes contain powerful antifungal compounds and natural pigments of anthocyanins. These stimulate bile from the liver which aids in digestion and detoxification. Radishes help kill bacteria and pathogens in the liver.
