Bicycle helmets have become an accepted and necessary part of bike riding culture. With busier roadways and faster bikes, head protection is a serious issue. To protect yours or your child's head adequately, a bike helmet must fit properly. An ill-fitting helmet can shift and be almost as ineffective as no helmet at all. Adjusting a bike helmet so it fits properly is not difficult to do.
Step 1
Place the helmet on your head and fasten the chin strap. Move it from side to side and back and forth. It should move less than an inch in any direction, according to MayoClinic.com.
Step 2
Look up and you should barely be able to see the front rim of the helmet, says the Bicycle Helmet Safety Institute. Check the "Y" on the side straps to see they meet just below your ear, and open your mouth wide to feel if the helmet pulls down on your head just a little.
Step 3
Slide the buckle on the left side of the chin strap, or at the back of the helmet to lengthen or shorten the chin strap as needed. Take the helmet off to perform the adjustment if necessary.
Step 4
Slide the buckles underneath the ears up or down to make the "Y" fit just below the ear. Remove the helmet to perform the adjustment if necessary.
Step 5
Add extra foam pads to the sides, front, or rear of the inside of the helmet if they are needed to have the helmet fit correctly. Apply any extra pads in such as way that they done' alter the shape of the helmet too much.
