Deep scars can occur due to skin injuries, puncture wounds, acne, burns and cuts. Some are mild while others are more severe. The treatment for deep scars will depend on personal preference and severity of scarring. Lasers, soft tissue fillers, dermabrasion and punch excision are all viable options when it comes to deep scar removal.
Step 1
Use laser treatments to remove deep scars. Nonablative lasers eliminate scars by scanning laser light to underneath layers of the skin, while leaving surface layers intact. Fractional laser uses a laser with a wavelength creating holes in your skin tissue. Once the tissue is destroyed, fresh skin emerges. Often laser therapy requires multiple sessions before results are visible.
Step 2
Schedule an appointment with a dermatologist to find out if tissue fillers work for you. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, soft tissue fillers provide the most immediate improvement to scars. Most require multiple injections as to continuously see results. The most frequently utilized fillers are collagen, hyaluronic acid and your own fatty tissues.
Step 3
Use punch excision for the most severe scars. A local anesthetic is applied at the affected site, then a punch biopsy tool is used to remove scars. Surrounding skin is sutured together allowing tissue to heal in two to three weeks. Your doctor may choose to do a skin graft from another area of your body to replace excised skin.
Step 4
Visit a dermatologist to receive dermabrasion. A rotary sanding instrument removes the deeply scarred skin. This procedure is dramatic and only has to be performed once to see results. Redness or swelling may result for a few weeks after treatment, but once it has healed, your skin has a scar free appearance.
