Chicago offers a world of activities for toddlers. From dress-up and imagination activities to a visit to the zoo, toddlers are encouraged to learn, socialize and explore in various venues throughout the city. The Children's Museum has a number of interactive exhibitions for children under the age of 5.

Play Area for Toddlers

Toddlers can visit play stations, watch trains on train tables, read in a specially designated spot and play dress-up in a playhouse at Kid City on Grand Avenue. This play area provides ample opportunities for toddlers to do art projects, ride and push little cars, and explore the toys at each station. A kitchen offers space for snacks or lunch, and adults can enjoy a cup of coffee provided by Kid City. As of 2010, the facility is open from Tuesday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Winter Playgroup

A winter playgroup for toddlers 6 months to 3 years is located on North Broadway. Parents are invited to try out Toddlers' Playhouse free of charge for the first visit. The atmosphere is relaxed to support nurturing and learning. The space will accommodate 25 children in the carpeted play area. Activities include Circle Time, parachute play, music, seasonal projects and arts and crafts. Birthday parties are welcome. As of 2010, there are two 16-week sessions, starting in September and January.

Museum Activities

The Chicago Children's Museum on East Grand Avenue near the Navy Pier includes the Pritzker Playspace with programs for children from infancy through age 5. Programs include building activities, an interactive literary experience, sensory exploration and art. Treehouse Trails invites children to play in a make-believe river, waterfall and treehouse. WaterWays allows children to get wet and discover squirting, pumping and a giant water wheel.

Birthday Party Facility

A specially designed facility for children age 6 and under is the ideal place for a birthday party. Fantasy Kingdom provides a parent-supervised play space where young visitors can use their imagination to go grocery shopping, catch a bad guy or become a hero firefighter. Costumes are provided for dress-up. This facility is located on North Kingsbury Street.

Zoo

Lincoln Park Zoo, located just north of Chicago, provides the opportunity for visitors to see lions, gorillas and animals of the tropical rainforest. Strollers are available for toddlers. The zoo is located off Lake Shore Drive at the Fullerton Parkway exit.
