How to Curl Kids Hair

Styling your child's hair is not always easy. Many little girls like to get dressed up, but being patient enough to have their hair styled is another matter. Curls are a traditional way to add a dressy appearance and can be worn up, down, or swept back in a hair band. There are two ways to curl your child's hair temporarily, with a curling iron or with sponge curlers. A curling iron is easier on your child, as she won't have to sleep in the curlers. A child with hard to curl hair will have longer lasting curls with sponge rollers.

Curling Iron

Step 1

Start with clean, dry hair. Damp hair will singe in the hot curling iron. It is easier on the hair to wash the night before so that the hair will be dry by morning. Few children are patient enough to sit through a blow-drying session as well as a hair curling session.

Step 2

Curl hair one section at a time. Pick up one 1-inch section of hair and clamp it in the curling iron, about one-half way between the scalp and the ends. Gently slide the curling iron to the ends of hair and roll the iron toward the scalp. Hold the hair in the iron until it feels warm and then gently release it. Move on to the next section.

Step 3

Spray lightly with hairspray. Once you have curled all of the hair, spray it lightly with hairspray to help hold the curl in place.

Sponge Rollers

Step 1

Start with clean, wet hair. Sponge rollers are most effective when the hair is set while wet and allowed to dry while wrapped on the rollers.

Step 2

Curl hair in sections. Start at the back of the head, toward the top. Curl hair a section at a time, working first toward the nape of the neck and then toward the face. Pay extra attention to the hair around the face to minimize the amount of styling that you will need to do in the morning. Make sure to tuck all of the ends into the curlers so there are no straight pieces hanging out.

Step 3

Unroll carefully in the morning. Start at the back of the head, toward the bottom and work your way up, then toward the face. This reduces the chances of tangling the curlers in the hair.

Step 4

Set the curl with a spray of hairspray. Run your fingers lightly through the hair to separate the curls and then spray lightly with hairspray.

Tips and Warnings

  • Your child's skin is more sensitive than yours is, be cautious when curling around the face with the hot curling iron.
  • Children with very thick hair may need to have their hair blow dried somewhat so that it will dry overnight when using sponge rollers.
