Chronic constipation is a disorder that can occur at any age and cause irregular bowl movements, hard and dry stool and straining while going to the bathroom. Constipation can happen to anyone and can be brought on by a number of things, but chronic constipation is usually the result of a deficiency in fiber or other bowel problems. Laxatives are usually prescribed to treat this issue, but there are several adjustments you can make to your diet to alleviate this problem, particularly if the degree of your constipation is minor.
Step 1
Drink at least eight glasses (64 oz.) of fluid every day. This should be primarily water but can also include juices, such as prune or apple juice, which help with constipation.
Step 2
Eat foods high in fiber, such as oatmeal, whole grain breads, chocolate, vegetables, beans and fruits, particularly dried fruits.
Step 3
Buy foods that are fiber-enriched or that promote the regulation of your bowels, such as Activia Yogurt and Fiber One products.
Step 4
Drink coffee or caffeinated beverages. The caffeine works as a laxative.
Step 5
Go to the bathroom when the urge hits. Do not wait. Holding bowel movements can worsen your constipation.
