Many people face the daily conflict of deciding whether or not to get something quick for lunch from fast food or take time to find something healthy. But because of increasing demand, fast-food restaurants, as of 2010, are adapting their menus to accommodate people looking for healthy, low-carb food who might not have time for a sit-down meal.
Go Bun-Less
A basic way to avoid a significant amount of carbs, the bun, is to simply ask for your burger without it. You will most likely need a fork and knife to eat the food, but you will avoid the main source of carbs in the hamburger. This also applies at Mexican restaurants, where you can skip the tortilla. Kentucky Fried Chicken also offers a Double Down Sandwich in which the buns are replaced by chicken breasts, with the sandwich coming in at 3 g of carbs.
Salads and Vegetables
McDonald's and Subway each offer salads on their menu, but you have to be smart to make these options low carb. Chicken and cheese are primary culprits of carbohydrates, so skipping these two foods is beneficial to your low-carb diet. Look for fat-free or low-fat dressings as well. Fatty dressings quickly add carbs to your salad. Taco Bell offers a fresco style to most menu options, where the meat and cheese are replaced with salsa.
Skip the Fries
French fries are a large source of carbohydrates, and many restaurants offer healthier alternatives to go with your entree. Burger King offers apple fries, McDonald's has apple dippers and Wendy's offers Mandarin oranges.
