Gravity tends to pull face muscles down over time, which gives areas of the face a hollow, flat appearance. A loss of volume in the cheeks can lead to hollowing under the eyes that also makes under-eye bags stand out. A cosmetic surgeon might opt to use inferior orbital rim implants, which can help fill in under-eye hollows. However, if you prefer an less invasive approach, you can improve the appearance of under-eye hollows by exercising your facial muscles on a regular basis.

Eye Squeeze

The eye squeeze exercise was devised by Deborah Crowley as part of her Flex Effect facial resistance training routine. The exercise targets both the upper and lower eyelids and tones the entire eye area.

Close your eyes tightly and place a fingertip on each closed lid. This is for concentration reasons only. Squeeze your eyes shut while counting to three. Quickly snap your eyes open and continue counting to six while darting your gaze quickly from left to right and back again. Repeat the exercise 10 times.

Lower Lid Lift

Deborah Crowley also recommends the "Lower Lid Lift" to firm and build the area around the lower eyelids. Pull your lower lids down by using the three middle fingers of each hand. Hold against the top of your cheekbones. Simultaneously, try to close your eyes without releasing your hold. Count to six while holding and repeat 10 times. Crowley recommends practicing the exercise at least five times weekly for optimal results.

Under Eye Strengthener

While looking in a mirror, apply petroleum jelly or a moisturizer under your eyes. Lean towards the mirror and steady yourself with your hands resting on a table or wash stand. While watching your eyes closely in the mirror, very slowly lift your lower lids in tiny movements. When first starting out, make just two movements upwards and two movements downwards. As you find the exercise becomes easier with practice, increase the movements to five in each direction.

When you reach the fifth step your eyes should almost be closed. All movement should be achieved by moving only the lower lids. As your raise your lower lids, you should notice the muscle movement raises toward the bridge of the nose. This indicates you are executing the exercise correctly.

Repeat the routine three times. According to Eva Fraser, author of Eva Fraser's facial workout, when this exercise is performed at least five times per week, it will help eliminate bags and fill out hollows under the eyes.
