The body's internal pH is graded on a scale from 1 to 14, with 14 being the most alkaline. According to Medline Plus, the body's pH is generally tested through blood and urine samples to detect how high an individual's internal pH is on the acidity-alkalinity scale. While it is generally considered beneficial to monitor your internal pH with the foods and beverages you consume, individuals are far more likely to suffer from excess acidity as opposed to alkalinity. With precision, patience and a willingness to dedicate your time, practically anyone can discover their body's acidity and alkalinity.
Step 1
Notice if you experience any common symptoms of acidity in the body, such as excess gas or acid reflux. According to the Care 2 Foundation, symptoms of acidification in the body can range from lower body temperature and anxiousness to conjunctivitis, loose teeth, nervousness and a susceptibility to infections. Create an acidity and alkalinity diary wherein you take breaks throughout the day and write down whether or not you have experienced acidic symptoms during your daily routine.
Step 2
Acquire a package of pH test strips available at most drug and pharmacy stores and read the instructions on the product's label. Drink at least one 8 ounce glass of water and swish out the contents of your mouth to decrease the chance of excess materials effecting your results. Wait 3 to 5 minutes for your saliva to neutralize and place one of the individual pH test strips on your tongue.
Step 3
Press your tongue to the roof of your mouth and wait 30 to 90 seconds as per the specific directions on your product label. Remove the pH test strip and compare the color with the pH identification color scale that came with your test strips. Notice if the color of your strip leans toward a blue, or alkaline shade, or dips into the acidic red spectrum.
Step 4
Ask your doctor or local clinic for a "clean catch" urine test to help accurately determine your body's alkalinity. According to the Dieto Bio web resource, the first urine excreted in the morning or during the night generally has an acidic pH of 5 or lower, while a healthy urine sample taken later in the morning or during the day should reveal a pH of 7 or 7.5. Consult with your physician on your test results and, should your results be higher than 7.5, what actions you should take to manage your alkalinity.
Tips and Warnings
- The most accurate and expensive method for testing the body's pH is to receive a blood test from your doctor. This may be less useful, however, as your body's pH can fluctuate and change rapidly throughout the day based on your diet, exercise level and emotional state.
- Always consult your doctor or personal physician before taking any medication or self-diagnosed treatment based on your body's internal pH.
