Diabetes involves a problem in maintaining healthy levels of blood sugar. When sustained over a long period of time, high levels of blood sugar can damage almost every system in the body. The American Diabetes Association reports that the risk of having a heart attack or stroke is more than twice as high in diabetics than non diabetics.

Type 1 Diabetes Symptoms

The American Diabetes Association explains that the symptoms of type 1 diabetes include frequent urination, unusual thirst, extreme hunger, unusual weight loss and extreme fatigue and Irritability. Type 1 diabetes is usually diagnosed by the child's pediatrician. It is treated by regular monitoring of blood sugar levels, diet and insulin injections.

Type 2 Diabetes Symptoms

The American Diabetes Association reports that symptoms of type 2 diabetes include all the symptoms of type 1, as well as frequent infections, blurred vision, cuts and bruises that are slow to heal, a tingling or numbness in the extremities and recurring infections. Unlike type 1, patients with type 2 diabetes often go undiagnosed for long periods of time. Type 2 diabetes tends to be diagnosed earlier in people who visit their doctors regularly because the high levels of blood sugar are found in routine labs.

Heart Attack Symptoms

The American Heart Association reports that heart attacks fall into two categories: those in which the pain is so extreme that there is no doubt that the patient is having a heart attack and those that have more subtle symptoms. Many heart attacks occur slowly. They begin with only mild pain in the chest that comes and goes for a period of hours. The pain can also feel like uncomfortable pressure or squeezing in the chest and may or may not be accompanied by shortness of breath. Pain can spread to one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw and/or stomach. The patient may also break out in a cold sweat and become nauseous.
