Hemorrhoids are an unfortunately common discomfort often associated with constipation and pregnancy. Soaking in Epsom salt is sometimes recommended as a home remedy for the itching and pain associated with hemorrhoids. Epsom salt has other purposes that may be useful when hemorrhoids are present. As with any other home remedy, seek the advice of a health-care provider before using Epsom salt to treat hemorrhoids or constipation.

Significance

Epsom salt contains magnesium, a mineral that is important for many systems in the body, according to the independent drug information website Drugs.com. A magnesium supplement can be taken to relieve constipation because it has the ability to bring liquid to the fecal matter to soften it and make it easier to pass.

Effects of Hemorrhoids

Hemorrhoids are swollen veins inside the rectum. They can cause pain when you are trying to have a bowel movement, walking, standing or sitting. Some bleeding can occur when stools pass over the hemorrhoids, as the lining of the lower digestive tract is full of veins and blood vessels. The hemorrhoids and anal area may itch and burn, especially as the veins begin to shrink.

Causes

Hemorrhoids are often caused by increased pressure from difficult-to-pass bowel movements, frequent diarrhea or constipation, sitting on the toilet too long, obesity, heavy lifting and any other strain placed on the rectal area, according to the American Academy of Family Physicians' website FamilyDoctor.org.

Prevention

Increasing fluids and fiber can improve constipation and soften stools. Straining during a bowel movement can exacerbate the problem. MotherNature.com suggests lubricating the lower 1/2 inch of the rectum with petroleum jelly to make it easier to pass hard stools that are common with constipation. Apply with a cotton swab or a clean finger.

Epsom Salt Bath Treatment

A sitz bath with Epsom salt is one of the primary recommendations for treatment of hemorrhoids, according to MotherNature.com. The warmth of the bath can reduce the pain and increase blood flow to the rectal area to shrink the swollen veins. The Epsom Salt Council explains that soaking in a bath of Epsom salt can improve circulation, reduce blood clots, ease pain and relieve stress. Alternatively, saturate a soft cloth with a solution prepared by dissolving Epsom salt in warm water and apply it to the hemorrhoids.

Considerations

Epsom salt is sometimes ingested as a stool softener or laxative. The Epsom Salt Council explains that studies have shown that individual differences, including stomach acid and the use of some medications, can alter the effectiveness of ingesting magnesium sulfate. If you are considering taking Epsom salt, contact your health-care professional for proper dosage. Drugs.com warns that you should stop using the supplement and consult a health-care professional if you have rectal bleeding or fail to have a bowel movement after using the supplement.
