Levaquin is a medication in a class of drugs known as fluoroquinolone antibiotics. Antibiotics work by killing the harmful bacteria in the body that cause infection. According to PubMed Health, Levaquin is used to treat infections such as pneumonia; chronic bronchitis; and sinus, urinary tract, kidney, prostate and skin infections. A patient taking 500 mg of Levaquin daily should take his medication for the entire course it is prescribed, since ending treatment early may cause a return or worsening of infection. There are some side effects associated with 500 mg of Levaquin.
Confusion and Dizziness
Patients taking Levaquin 500 mg may experience confusion and dizziness. These side effects may lessen after a couple of days as the body adjusts to Levaquin. According to PubMed Health, users should not drive a car, operate machinery, or participate in activities requiring alertness or coordination until they know how this medication may affect them.
Headache
Headache may occur in patients taking Levaquin. Patients should consult their physicians regarding the use of an over-the-counter pain medication, such as acetaminophen, for the relief of occasional headache. A headache that is persistent or becomes severe, or is accompanied by seizure, flu-like symptoms, hallucination, or weakness on one side of the body may be a sign of a serious reaction and should be reported to a physician.
Stomach Discomfort
Levaquin 500 mg may cause stomach discomfort in some users. According to the manufacturer, the most common adverse reactions to Levaquin include nausea, diarrhea and constipation. Levaquin may be taken with food to lessen these effects. Avoiding spicy or fried foods and eating smaller meals spaced frequently throughout the day may help to combat stomach discomfort. If a lack of appetite occurs while taking Levaquin, the use of a nutritional supplement shake may be beneficial to ensure an adequate daily intake of nutrients. Severe diarrhea or diarrhea that contains blood should be reported to a doctor. It may be a sign of a serious side effect and can also lead to dehydration and additional complications.
