List of Purine Protein Foods

Purines are a substance found in the human body that protect and nourish the blood vessels. However, when the kidneys can no longer process them, they turn into uric acid crystals that can accumulate in the joints, according to dietaryfiberfood.com. This condition, called gout, is uncomfortable at best and extremely painful at most. To avoid gout, you'll need to avoid foods rich in these purines, which coincidentally are usually foods high in protein.

Small Fish & Shellfish

Many shellfish and small fish tend to be high in both purines and protein, meaning you should stay away from them if you're a candidate for gout. Examples include anchovies, mackerel, bluefish, codfish, halibut, lobster, trout, tuna, snapper, crab, mussels and herring.

Organ Meats

Organ meats are packed full of protein and purines, making them nutritious in moderation but harmful if ingested regularly. Prime suspects include liver, kidney, brains, tripe and tongue.

Beans, Nuts & Legumes

Beans, nuts and legumes are full of protein. Unfortunately, they often carry a high level of purines as well. A few products you might want to stay away from if you have a uric acid problem include lentils, kidney beans, navy beans, lima beans, peas, peanuts and walnuts.

Meat & Poultry

Steering clear of meat products might be a good idea if you suffer from gout, kidney or heart issues. Offenders include beef, chicken, ham, pork, rabbit, turkey, sheep, veal, goose, bacon and duck. There's nothing wrong with having chicken for dinner, but vary it up with some vegetable-based meals for better balance and better health.
