Tea tree leaves have been used to heal a variety of skin ailments for thousands of years. Modern herbalists confirm that tea tree oil contains terpenoids, which have therapeutic amounts of antiseptic, anti-microbial and anti-fungal properties. Using the essential oil of the tea tree plant is a natural way to combat fungus without resorting to chemicals. Consult your physician before trying herbal remedies to treat fungus issues.
Athlete's Foot Fungus
Susan Weed, author of "Healing Wise," recommends using tea tree essential oil on areas affected by athlete's foot fungus. Add 20 drops of tea tree oil to 1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil for an effective and healing foot massage oil. Rub the feet with the infused oil twice a day. Wash hands after application to prevent fungal spread.
Toenail Fungus
Toenail fungus is one of the most aggressive types of fungus because it embeds in the nail fibers. Tea tree oil has been shown to work as effectively as medically prescribed anti-fungal creams, says herbalist Rosemary Gladstar. With consistent use over a six- to 12-month period, tea tree essential oil prevents fungus from spreading to newly grown fibers in the toenail. As the nail grows out, infected layers can be trimmed, leaving the nail bed free from fungal growth. For chronic toenail fungus, consult a physician to rule out other health issues.
Ringworm Fungus
Ringworm is a fungal infection under the dermal layer of skin. It manifests in a ringlike form and is easily passed from one person to another through physical contact. Tea tree essential oil can be used to eradicate ringworm fungus, according to the "Essential Oils Desk Reference." Use 100 percent tea tree oil drops applied twice a day or a carrier oil infused with tea tree oil. For use with children, consult with your child's pediatrician.
Prevention
Fungus is highly contagious and stubborn, which makes prevention essential. Any type of fungus can be spread from person to person, or from an infected area to a person. Avoid going barefoot in public showers or swimming areas, because fungus thrives in moist areas. Wear flip-flops in public showers.
If you have a partner with active fungal issues or share a bathroom with others, make an anti-fungal spray from 1 ounce tea tree essential oil mixed with 3 cups of water or vinegar. Use the spray daily in bathroom areas where going barefoot is expected. Treat any suspected fungal outbreak with tea tree essential oil as soon as possible.
Considerations
Essential oils are concentrated essences of their plant of origin. These oils should be considered toxic and kept away from children and animals to avoid misuse or accidental poisoning. Always test areas of intended use for sensitivity or allergic reaction, and keep them away from mucous membranes. Those with sensitive skin should never use tea tree oil unless it is diluted with a carrier oil. Should skin irritation occur, stop use immediately and consult with your natural health practitioner for guidance.
