How to Exercise During the Holidays

How to Exercise During the Holidays

The period between Thanksgiving and New Year's Day is often characterized by merriment, stress and weight gain. Christmas shopping interferes with workout time. Holiday hours at the gym may limit the available hours for exercise. Fortunately, with just a bit of creativity, you can find ways to stay in shape during the holiday season.

Step 1

Shop for presents online. There is no need to waste valuable gym time at the department stores. Order your presents online, and while everyone is waiting in line at the stores, enjoy the extra space at the gym.

Step 2

Enter a holiday-themed run or walking race. Most states, towns or cities sponsor some sort of Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving, as well as a Christmas-themed race.

Step 3

Take a post-Thanksgiving dinner walk. If possible, involve the entire family. If none of the adults are interested, walk the family dog or take the kids outside to play.

Step 4

If the conditions are right, you can snowshoe, cross-country ski or ice skate. These outdoor activities burn calories and keep you in the holiday spirit.

Step 5

Go Christmas caroling. Choose a caroling group that walks around the neighborhood, so that you can get some walking exercise.

Step 6

Shovel the snow, instead of hiring someone else to do it.

Step 7

Schedule yourself to participate in an athletic event for the spring. Training for an event will keep you motivated and make you less likely to miss exercise sessions.

Step 8

Go dancing. It will be fun for you and good for your waistline.

Step 9

Purchase exercise DVDs. If you cannot get to your exercise class, bring your class to your home. Consider trying a different type of workout.

Tips and Warnings

  • If you would prefer to shop for presents at shopping malls, do an hour of mall walking before shopping. Use steps instead of escalators.
