The Menstrual Cycle
The menstrual cycle is the reproductive cycle all women follow. This cycle contains several phases, though it is characterized by menstruation, which involves a discharge of blood and tissue from the uterus each month. For the rest of the cycle, the uterine lining changes in order to accommodate a potential fetus. For a few days, during ovulation, an ovum is released and may be fertilized. If it is not, then menstruation occurs.
Positive Effects of Exercise on the Menstrual Cycle
Though menstruation can cause some unpleasant symptoms like cramps and bloating that make you feel like not doing much of anything, exercise can actually be beneficial and helpful at this time of the month. In fact, exercise can help get rid of cramps, headaches and bloating caused by menstruation. Physical activity releases endorphins into the body, which can improve your mood and get rid of feelings of depression or anxiety.
Negative Effects of Exercise on the Menstrual Cycle
In some cases, exercise can have a negative impact on your menstrual cycle. This is usually only prevalent in women who are very rigorous exercisers that take part in activities like gymnastics, dancing or running. Continually working out means your body uses a lot of energy, and it will shut down certain processes in an attempt to use your energy for the most benefit. This results in amenorrhea, or a lack of a period. However, decreasing the amount you exercise to more moderate levels can induce your body to bring back a more regular menstrual cycle.
