How to Read an Exergen Thermometer

Exergen thermometers are different than traditional thermometers. Exergen thermometers are used on the temple and they base their readings on the temporal artery blood flow, according to the official website of Exergen. Many people turn to Exergen thermometers due to their ease of use, accuracy and their ability to record a person's temperature in as little as six seconds. However, the MayoClinic.com website notes that the reliability of temporal artery thermometers has not been verified.

Step 1

Remove the protective cap that covers the lens of the thermometer.

Step 2

Press the "Scan" button on the thermometer. Remain pressing the button. Do not release.

Step 3

Place the probe in the center of the forehead. Keep the sensor flat against the skin at all times.

Step 4

Slide the thermometer straight across the forehead, past the temple, until you reach the hairline. Do not move the thermometer down the side of the face as this could result in false low readings.

Step 5

Listen for a series of beeps and notice when the red light blinks. This indicates a measurement is taking place.

Step 6

Release the "scan" button after you've reached the hairline and have heard the series of beeps. Remove the thermometer from the head and read the temperature displayed.

Step 7

Replace the protective cap.

Tips and Warnings

  • Move the probe gently and slowly for best results. Clean the thermometer with a cotton swab and running alcohol before each use. The thermometer will automatically turn off after 30 seconds.
  • Sweating may interfere with the accuracy of the reading, according to the Exergen Temporal Artery Thermometer instruction manual. If the reading does not seem accurate, repeat the process or use a traditional thermometer to confirm the reading.
