How to Make Your Own Frozen Diet Meals

Creating your own frozen meals is a fun and healthy way to save time and money. Homemade meals are tastier than frozen entrees and free of harmful additives and preservatives. So get your spatula and shopping list ready. It will take a bit of planning and preparation, but you will find it is well worth your efforts.

Step 1

Allow your favorite healthy home-cooked dish to cool completely.

Step 2

Divide the dish into single-size portions with a measuring cup or spatula. Place one portion in each airtight container. Top each container with plastic wrap and an airtight lid.

Step 3

Label each container with the name of the dish and the date of preparation using your permanent marker.

Step 4

Store containers in your freezer for up to three months, reheating or allowing to thaw as needed.

Tips and Warnings

  • Do not refreeze thawed or re-cooked portions. When freezing vegetables, leave them slightly undercooked to ensure appropriate texture upon thawing and cooking. Avoid freezing egg or cream-based foods for the most part because they do not freeze as well as soups or casseroles.
  • Never freeze dishes that have not fully cooled or re-freeze a thawed-out portion. Either scenario can lead to harmful bacteria production.

Things You'll Need

  • Large batch of your favorite soup, chili or casserole
  • Measuring cup
  • Spatula
  • Airtight containers
  • Plastic wrap
  • Permanent marker
