Home Remedies for Age Spots on Face

Age spots, also known as liver spots, are found on the skin and are commonly caused by over exposure to the sun. The face, as well as the shoulders, neck, arms and hands, are common places for age spots to appear. The spots are brown, gray or black in color. The smooth spots vary in size and are indicative of cancer growth. Though harmless, many people wish to remove age spots for cosmetic reasons. The only true way to prevent age spots is to avoid the sun, and wear adequate amounts of sunscreen, according to The Mayo Clinic. However, a variety of home remedies may lighten age spots and make their appearance less prominent.

Bleaching Creams

Depending on the color of the age spot, and how often cream is applied, a variety of over-the-counter bleaching creams and lotions can be applied at home. The Mayo Clinic suggests looking for creams containing deoxyarbutin, glycolic acid or kojic acid.
Purchase creams over-the-counter at most pharmacy and drug stores; a prescription is not required. Use a cotton ball to apply the cream. Use caution when applying the cream---try to apply cream only to the age spot to avoid lightening surrounding skin, recommends Mother Nature, a website devoted to home remedies. Watch for results in one to two months.

Lemons, Onions and Potatoes

Cut open a fresh lemon and squeeze the juice into a clean bowl; the acidic content of lemon juice is a natural bleaching agent. Use a cotton ball and dab into the lemon solution. Apply onto the age spot twice a day recommends Mother Nature. Skin will lighten in six to eight weeks. Alternatively, slice open a red onion or potato and rub onto the skin; the effects will be similar to using a lemon.

Vitamin E

Use vitamin E to repair damaged tissue and decrease aging of the skin. Puncture a vitamin E 400 I.U.capsule. Squeeze out a small portion of the liquid onto the skin. Rub and massage onto the age spot. Leave on overnight to dry. Mama Herb, an online herbal remedy website, recommends continuing the treatment for two months.
