Dealing with muscle spasms can make your life difficult and interfere with daily activities. Trying to find a way to decrease the occurrence of muscle spasms and twitches can be even more troublesome. Prescription medications can be costly and may come with undesirable side effects. However, natural remedies to treat such ailments do exist. To remain in the best health possible, speak to a medical professional before beginning any new supplements or medication.

Celery Seed

Celery seed is typically used as a diuretic, but is also useful for treating muscle spasms and calming nerves. A typical dose, as suggested by the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC), is one to two capsules of celery seed three times a day while under the supervision of a qualified health professional. At the same time, drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration.

Yarrow

Yarrow is an herb that has been used medicinally since the Roman empire. Yarrow is known to treat several ailments including indigestion and insomnia, as well as muscle spasms and menstrual cramps. Yarrow can be taken in tea, capsules or extracts. To relieve muscle cramps and spasms, UMMC suggests taking two to four grams, in capsule or tablet form, three times per day.

Rosemary

A common herb used to flavor food and found in many households today, rosemary can help treat the symptoms of many conditions. Rosemary oil may be effective in easing muscle pain and cramps, and can be purchased at most health food and vitamin stores. To relax muscles and reduce cramps and spasms, apply rosemary oil directly to the affected area. Avoid contact with your eyes, and speak with a doctor before use.
