Acne scars sometimes persist years after the blemishes have cleared. Scar removal performed by a dermatologist using lasers or dermabrasion can be expensive. With high-quality makeup, however, you can successfully camouflage acne marks. According to Dr. Jeffrey Rapaport, Cosmetic Skin and Surgery Center in Englewood, New Jersey, you should look for hypoallergenic, oil-free products from professional cosmetics companies for best results. You can also use these products to cover up an emerging pimple.

Step 1

Wash your face with a mild, oil-free facial cleanser and pat your skin dry with a clean towel.

Step 2

Apply concealer to any red or blotchy areas using a fresh cotton swab. Using the sponge tip applicator that comes with your concealer and then inserting it back into the tube can transfer bacteria to your makeup.

Step 3

Blend the concealer using a disposable makeup sponge.

Step 4

Apply foundation sparingly over the concealer using a light dabbing motion and blend it using the makeup sponge. Allow it to dry and apply a second coat if needed. Throw away the sponge when you are finished.

Step 5

Dust a light layer of powder over your face using a large makeup brush to set your foundation.

Tips and Warnings

  • Wash your makeup brushes regularly with antibacterial soap and lay them flat on a clean towel to dry.
