A number of diets suggest that people should eat diets low in carbohydrates to promote weight loss. Limiting your diet to only these foods will cause you to be deficit in certain vitamins, minerals and fiber; this can have negative effects on your overall health over the long term. Whole grain carbohydrates provide you with valuable fiber and energy to maintain your health. Avoiding simple carbohydrates such as sugar and white bread is more important than limiting your total carbohydrates.

Fish

Fish are low in carbohydrates. Fish is generally a good source of protein that is lower in unhealthy saturated fats than other animal proteins such as beef. Possible low-carbohydrate fish choices include salmon, halibut, tuna and sardines. Avoid fish that is breaded because the bread will increase the carbohydrate content of the fish.

Beef

Products that contain beef are considered to be foods that contain minimal carbohydrates. The drawback of beef products is that they contain a significant amount of saturated fats, which increase your risk of heart disease. Beef is found in products such as ground beef, steak, roast and beef tips.

Eggs

Eggs provide you with a lean source of protein that is low in carbohydrates. If you want to reduce the amount of saturated fats and cholesterol that you get from eggs avoid eating the yoke, instead stick to the whites of the eggs.

Greens

Greens that are found in salads are low in carbohydrates. These include different forms of lettuce, spinach and sprouts. These foods also contain a limited amount of calories and zero fat. Also, they provide you with essential vitamins and minerals.

Vegetables

Non-starchy vegetables are low in carbohydrates. These vegetables include broccoli, carrots, tomatoes, kale, celery and peppers. Starchy vegetables such as potatoes and corn are not low in carbohydrates. Vegetables are important to an overall healthy diet because they are rich in fiber. Fiber helps your body properly digest foods and it provides you with cancer-fighting nutrients.

Diet Soda

Diet sodas contain zero carbohydrates because they are sugar free. People often drink diet soda to replace high-calorie sugary sodas in their diet. According to the Harvard School of Public Health, although diet sodas contain zero calories and promote weight loss in the short-run they may result in unknown long-term health risks.

Poultry

Poultry products such as turkey and chicken are generally low in carbohydrates and high in protein. If the chicken or turkey is fried or breaded it is no longer considered a low-carbohydrate food. Avoid the skin and the dark meat when eating chicken and turkey, because these sections contain the majority of the unhealthy fats and calories.
