Registered Dietitians are nutrition experts who have extensive training in the fields of food and nutrition. Dietitians are trusted nutrition professionals who have at least four years of undergraduate nutrition training supplemented with a one-year long dietetic internship. Dietitians are regulated health professionals and belong to a state or provincial licensing regulatory body. Finding a dietitian is relatively easy and can be done with the help of the Internet or a phone book.
Step 1
Go online. The Internet is a great resource to find information, including regulated and unregulated health professionals such as nutrition experts.
Step 2
Use search engines to locate a dietitian by country or enter web address for national dietetic bodies. Examples include the American Dietetic Association, Dietitians of Canada, or Dietitians Association of Australia.
Step 3
Browse homepages. Usually on the homepages of these websites are links or directions for finding a dietitian. Frequently, there are also additional features to help refine a search, including locating a dietitian in a particular city, province or state, by expertise, or field of work.
Tips and Warnings
- Without the Internet, a dietitian can easily be found by locating the number for the provincial or state regulatory body, for example, College of Dietitians of Ontario, and calling the organization to inquire about dietitians in a desired geographical area.
- Many individuals claim to have training in the field of food and nutrition and use various titles which may or may not be regulated. Obtain medical nutrition information from a regulated health care provider such as a dietitian, physician or pharmacist.
