If you have thin hair or have decided to grow your hair out, you may be searching for a type of shampoo whose ingredients can help or at least speed up the rate of hair growth. The key to growing healthy hair is making sure that you give your hair the right amount of nutrients it needs to thrive. Ensuring your shampoo has one or more of the following ingredients is a good way to start.

Amino Acids

Amino acids help increase hair growth, according to EurekAlert, an information website run by the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Amino acids give your body and hair the nutrients needed to help your body make proteins. Amino acids are referred to as the building blocks of protein. Without amino acids, your body would not be able to make proteins; this could result in hair loss since your hair is primarily made of protein. Not all shampoos are formulated with amino acids so you must read labels.

Biotin is part of the vitamin B complex and may sometimes be referred to as vitamin Pro B in certain shampoos. Your hair requires biotin for cell function, health and growth, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Biotin is so important to your that a severe lack of biotin can result in hair loss. Your hair and body require biotin to metabolize amino acids. It also helps strengthen your hair and fingernails. Certain shampoos, conditioners and other hair care products contain biotin to help increase hair growth, strength and improve overall hair health.

Pyrithione Zinc

A study conducted by Hill Top Research Inc. in Brunswick, New Jersey, tested hair growth on subjects using a shampoo consisting of one percent pyrithione zinc. The subjects used the shampoo on a daily basis and were compared to three other test groups; one group used a five-percent topical minoxidil treatment twice daily, another used a placebo shampoo, and the third used a combination of the pyrithione zinc shampoo and minoxidil topical solution. The study concluded that the subjects who only used the pyrithione zinc shampoo experienced a modest and sustained hair growth improvement over a 26 week treatment period.
