Weather conditions, damage and your hair's natural texture can all make it look dull and lifeless. While simply brushing or combing your hair can make it look healthier and shiny, you can also selectively choose products that will give your hair shine. Products that are silicone- and protein-based are ideal for adding shine to the finish of a hairstyle and mimic the look of healthier hair, as well as finding products that help you regain healthy locks.
Condition to Give Shine
Typical shampoos contain sodium lauryl sulfate or sodium laureth sulfate. Both are the detergents responsible for the sudsing action you get while washing your hair. Unfortunately, both can strip hair of natural oils that make your hair look shiny and healthy after washing. By making sure to use a hydrating or moisturizing conditioner, you can bring some of the moisture and shine back to your hair, notes "Marie Claire" magazine. Unless you're using an SLS-free shampoo, you should always follow shampooing with conditioning.
Styling Cream or Serum
While you may rely on mousse, gel or hairspray to get the look that you want, all three are alcohol-based. Alcohol can help hold your hairstyle, but it can also dry out hair. For shinier locks, try a styling cream or serum that is used on wet hair to help shape and mold your style while it dries. They'll both add shine and hold without drying out your hair and leaving it parched for moisture. Look for serums that are alcohol-free or have more natural shining properties.
Natural Bristle Brush
The type of brush you use could mean the difference between dry, tangled hair and smooth, shiny hair. Using a natural bristle brush while you blow dry and style your hair helps to distribute the natural oils in your hair for a shinier look, hairstylist Frédéric Fekkai tells "Allure" magazine. While a natural bristle brush is typically more expensive than synthetic brushes, it may be a good investment in getting healthier, shinier hair.
Shine Spray
To finish off your look when you've gotten it just right, a shine spray can add sleekness and shine to your styled hair. Shine spray is silicone-based, which coats the hair cuticle and makes it look smooth and shiny, notes "Harper's Bazaar" magazine. Look for a formula that specifically lists silicone as an ingredient on the list of ingredients. Use shine sprays with a light hand; if you use too much, your hair can look greasy instead of shiny. If you find that you've accidentally used too much, brush a little cornstarch through your hair to absorb the excess product.
