How to Change a Diet to Ease GERD

GERD stands for gastroesophageal reflux disease. GERD is severe, chronic acid reflux (heartburn). When a small valve, called the lower esophageal sphincter, is not functioning correctly, digestive stomach acids get pushed back up the esophagus. This causes an uncomfortable heartburn feeling. The acid can also damage your throat and mouth and break down the enamel of your teeth. See your doctor about getting a medication to help your GERD symptoms. In many cases, changing your diet and how you eat can significantly help the symptoms of GERD.

Step 1

Eat less. When there is too much food in the stomach, it can back up into the lower esophageal sphincter so that it cannot close properly. People who are obese are more at risk for developing GERD, according to the National Digestive Diseases Information Clearinghouse.

Step 2

Consume foods that aid digestion. Fiber is the best way to improve digestive health. Fiber is found in whole wheat, beans and vegetables. Drinking a lot of fluids, specifically water and tea, can also help digestion. Sugary drinks like soda and juice can lead to indigestion.

Step 3

Sooth the esophagus and neutralize acid. Add skim milk, apples (including apple cider vinegar and applesauce), yogurt and chamomile tea to your diet. These substances help neutralize acid or soothe and coat your throat to ease discomfort. Chewing gum can also increase saliva, which will coat and protect the throat against acid.

Step 4

Avoid acidic foods, which can lead to acid indigestion. Foods that become acidic in the body are commonly foods that are manmade. The preservatives and additives in the food are acidic to the body. Try not to eat many foods that have unnatural ingredients, such as packaged foods or premade meals. Other foods that increase GERD symptoms due to their acidity are chocolate, caffeine, alcohol, fried food, spices and tomato products like pizza, tomato sauce and chili.
