Pyrantel embonate, also known as pyrantel pamoate, belongs to a class of medications known as anthelmintic agents, according to Drugs.com. Anthelmintic drugs are dewormers, used to kill parasites in the body. Pyrantel embonate is used to treat worm infections such as pinworm, roundworm, hookworm and other worm infections. Pyrantel embonate works by paralyzing the nervous systems of the worms. The parasites are then excreted in stool. Pyrantel may cause side effects.

Gastrointestinal Effects

According to KidsHealth, pyrantel embonate may cause several gastrointestinal side effects. Patients may experience upset stomach, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal cramping. Pyrantel embonate should be taken with food so as to avoid an upset stomach. Long-term use of pyrantel may cause liver inflammation and damage. Pyrantel is metabolized in the liver and should not be used in patients with severe liver disease.

Nervous System Effects

Drugs.com states that pyrantel embonate may cause dizziness, drowsiness, insomnia, headache and irritability. Patients should avoid driving and operating machinery while taking pyrantel embonate until they are aware of how pyrantel affects their bodies.

Hypersensitivity

Patients may experience severe allergic reactions after taking pyrantel embonate, according to Drugs.com. These patients should avoid pyrantel embonate. Signs and symptoms of an allergic reaction to pyrantel embonate include throat closing, wheezing, chest tightness, swelling of the tongue, unusual voice hoarseness, hives and rash, itching and swelling of the face, lips, tongue and throat.
