Pyrantel is used to treat roundworm, hookworm, pinworm and other worm infections. Pyrantel comes as a capsule and liquid. The drug is usually taken as a single dose for the treatment of pinworms and roundworms. For the treatment of hookworm infections, pyrantel is taken once a day for three days. Pyrantel has several side effects.
Gastrointestinal Effects
According to Drugs.com, pyrantel causes several effects on the gastrointestinal system. Patients may experience loss of appetite, upset stomach, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramping and constipation. Long-term use of pyrantel may cause inflammation of the liver and increased liver enzymes. Signs and symptoms of liver inflammation include itching, yellowing of the eyes and skin, dark urine, clay-colored stool, swelling of the abdomen, right upper abdominal pain and loss of appetite.
Nervous System Effects
