It seems like the world focuses on the new baby and the mother when an addition is made to the family. That's probably the way it should be, but dads should not be ignored. The father has played an integral role throughout the birth process and will be the dominant male in the child's life for at least the next 18 years. New dads need at least some recognition and a few well thought out gifts.

A photo frame with the word dad in many languages and a picture of the proud father with his new baby is incredibly meaningful. Most dads savor the moment they become a father and while the child will grow, part of becoming a father is about that first moment and the joy it represents. This picture will capture it and it will be remembered together.
Book on Parenting
No dad knows everything. It's a good idea to get educated. If you are a friend of the dad, give a serious book on parenting. T. Berry Brazleton, the founder of the Child Development Unit at Children's Hospital in Boston, wrote a book called "Touchpoints" that is recognized as one of the top parenting books around.
New Bathrobe
A new baby in the house means that there will be some long nights ahead for both parents. Most parents split the night-shift---it is not just the mother's domain. Since dad will be up walking the floors and changing diapers, get him a new robe to make the experience a little more tolerable.
