How to Upgrade the Bowflex PR1000

The Bowflex PR1000 is one of the earliest models of Bowflex home gyms. While it uses the same power rod technology and full body workout programs as other models, the PR1000 only comes with 210 lbs. of resistance and does not have upgrade slots for additional power rods. Some users may find 210 lbs. inadequate for exercises such as the leg press and therefore will need to replace the existing power rods to upgrade the machine.

Step 1

Call Bowflex customer service and order a pair of replacement rods for the Bowflex PR1000. Each Bowflex model has unique power rods, so you must order the correct type. Choose replacement rods that will add an adequate amount of resistance for your workout, such as the 30 or 50 lb. set.

Step 2

Locate the joint in the vertical main frame that connects to the power rod pack. Insert a Phillips head screwdriver into one of the four screws that join the parts and turn it counterclockwise to remove the screw. Remove the remaining screws.

Step 3

Slide the power rod pack out of the main vertical frame. If the pack becomes stuck in the frame or is difficult to remove, tap the underside of it lightly with a rubber mallet to dislodge the component.

Step 4

Turn the power rod pack on its side to locate the screws holding the power rods in place. Find the screws that correspond with the rods you will be replacing. The rods you replace must be of less resistance than the new rods you are installing. For example, if you are installing 50-lb. power rods, replace a set of 30-lb. rods. If you are adding 30-lb. rods, replace 10-lb. rods.

Step 5

Unscrew the necessary rods and pull them out of the power rod pack casing. Bore out the plastic power rod pack casing with a drill and boring bit that is slightly smaller than the diameter of the new rods. Only drill down far enough that the new rod can be inserted fully into the casing.

Step 6

Insert the power rods back into the casing and screw them securely in place. Slide the power rod pack back into the vertical main frame. Tap it into place with the rubber mallet and screw it in place.

Step 7

Attach the cable hooks to the newly inserted rods and pull on the arm bands to ensure the rods are secured within the power rod pack.

Tips and Warnings
