The holidays can be a magical time, especially for children. This is partly because family and cultural traditions abound. You can make your own family tradition centered on choosing a tree. Doing so is a great opportunity for children to learn about types and sizes of trees, and their role in your family's celebration. There are several ways to involve your children in holiday tree selection.
Step 1
Invite your children to participate in preparing your home for the holiday tree. Let them choose the location they like best and help clear that area. Have the children help measure the area to learn what size tree can fit. Bring your measuring tape with you when you tree shop to help illustrate size to the children.
Step 2
Buy your tree from a farm that allows you to choose the it yourself so the children can select their own tree. Give them criteria beforehand, such as size and type of tree. Teach them about what to look for and what to avoid. Use the National Association of Christmas Trees' tree facts or tree games (see References) for inspiration. When they've chosen their tree, let them watch from a safe distance as an adult cuts it down.
Step 3
Take your children to the department store to let them help pick out an artificial tree. Choosing an artificial tree can be just as special as choosing a real one. Let your children bring their favorite ornament so they can "test out" the artificial trees on display.
Step 4
Ask your children to help assemble an artificial tree. This way, not only have they helped pick the tree out, they've also helped create it. Let each child choose an area where her ornaments and presents will go, and have them attach branches to that area. Afterwords, marvel at the tree the family "made."
Step 5
Make an evening of it. If you're purchasing a tree from a vendor that has the trees tied up and sorted by size, you can still have a special night. Make a tradition of eating in a special place or seeing a holiday-themed movie on tree pick-up day. Then, pick up your tree with everyone in the holiday spirit.
