When fat deposits force through connective tissue and collect just below the surface of the skin they form dimples known as cellulite. Generally appearing in the abdomen, pelvic region and thighs, cellulite can be a frustrating, embarrassing condition. According to "Fitness" magazine, an estimated 90 percent of women have cellulite, with genetics, diet, hormones, lifestyle factors and even clothing contributing to cellulite formation.

Diet

A proper diet can prevent cellulite or even reverse its effects, ridding the body of unwanted fat. Saturated fats, such as the ones found in fast food and fried dishes, should be eliminated entirely, as should alcohol and refined sugar. Eating fruits and vegetables provides necessary vitamins and nutrients to nourish the skin and help flush the body of harmful toxins. Also, drinking plenty of water will keep the skin hydrated and supple, serving to reduce dimpling.

Exercise

Performing regular exercise helps combat cellulite. Exercise firms the body and helps burn the excess fat that forms the cellulite deposits. As an added bonus, exercise will also help the skin retain its elasticity, which smooths dimples. Cardiovascular exercises such as walking, running, cycling, and swimming work best to burn fat.

Clothing

Wearing tight clothing with restrictive elastic bands or seams can hamper circulation and contribute to cellulite. Wearing looser clothing, especially undergarments, can help prevent the fat deposits from collecting under the skin. Some manufacturers even produce special anti-cellulite clothing such as compression shorts that compress arteries to improve blood flow and lymphatic function while also masking visual cellulite patches.

Creams

Several companies produce anti-cellulite creams that claim to eradicate the unsightly skin dimpling. While debate rages as to their effectiveness, anti-cellulite creams contend to penetrate deep into the skin and stimulate blood flow and lymphatic movement while aiding in connective tissue growth. Users must rub the cream into the cellulite at regular intervals to see results. As a general rule of thumb, opt for cellulite creams made from natural ingredients and free of any harmful chemicals.

Massage

Massage may reduce the appearance of cellulite. In theory, massaging the cellulite helps break up fat deposits and restore circulation to the dimpled area. This improved circulation enhances lymphatic function, making it easier for the body to lose fat. Massage therapists may either use their hands or a special device known as an endermologie to work out the cellulite. However, MayoClinic.com states any positive results are typically short-lived.
