Glucosamine and chondroitin are two naturally occurring substances found in cartilage. This combination of supplements is often taken by patients with osteoarthritis, and the available research suggests it may be beneficial for certain patients, according to MedlinePlus. Glucosamine and chondroitin and generally safe and well tolerated, although they sometimes cause mild side effects.

Stomach Upset

Commonly reported side effects of glucosamine and chondroitin include mild upset stomach and indigestion. Rare side effects have also been reported, including nausea, vomiting, heartburn, abdominal pain and loss of appetite. Glucosamine and chondroitin may also cause bloating, gas, constipation or diarrhea in rare cases, reports MedlinePlus. Taking glucosamine and chondroitin with food may reduce these side effects, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center.

Headache

Headache is another commonly reported side effect of glucosamine and chondroitin, the U.S. Department of Heath and Human Services explains. Glucosamine and chondroitin may also cause excessive drowsiness or tiredness. In certain patients, the supplements may result in insomnia.

Additional Side Effects

Glucosamine and chondroitin may cause additional side effects, such as temporary increases in blood pressure and heart rate, sometimes leading to heart palpitations. MedlinePlus reports. Certain patients may develop increased sensitivity to the sun. Skin reactions, such as a rash, have also been reported by patients taking glucosamine and chondroitin. In some cases, patients may experience an unusual toughening of the fingernails and toenails.
