The common cold, cosmetic surgery, a blunt trauma to the face or a long crying jag can all cause your nose to temporarily swell. No matter what the cause is, taking care of yourself properly, under the supervision of your physician when necessary, can help you contain the inflammation in your swollen nose and restore you to good health shortly.

Step 1

Apply ice to a nose that's swollen due to injury or reconstructive surgery. You can safely use an ice pack on your hurt nose for up to 20 minutes at a time, up to three times daily. The cold temperature can reduce inflammation and dull the pain.

Step 2

Keep your head elevated to encourage swelling to subside. Prop yourself up on pillows when you sleep, or rest in a reclining chair.

Step 3

Take an over-the-counter decongestant or decongestant-antihistamine combination drug, under the direction of your doctor, if you experience nasal congestion in addition to a swollen nose. The medication can help open nasal passages that are blocked, and reduce the swelling in your nasal tissues.

Step 4

Avoid taking hot baths, showers or participating in activities that raise your body temperature for a few days after your injury. The heat can increase the swelling in your nose.

Step 5

Consult your doctor about your swollen nose if the skin around your nose becomes thick, red and you also suffer from a red facial rash. These can be symptoms of rosacea, a chronic skin condition in which the blood vessels become damaged and leak fluid, causing swelling. The American Osteopathic College of Dermatology notes that alcohol, spicy foods, hot drinks and harsh facial cleansers are common triggers of rosacea that can intensify nasal swelling, and should be avoided.
