When you have any sort of wound, you run the risk of it turning into a scar after it has finished healing. A scar is tissue created by collagen under the skin to aid with the healing process. The collagen comes from the lower levels of the skin and fills in the gap created by the wound, resulting in a scar. As scars give a raised look to your skin, you may decide to take some steps to minimize scar tissue from forming
Step 1
Clean the wound with soap and water daily. This will promote quick healing. The longer a wound takes to heal, the more likely scarring is.
Step 2
Cover the scar with a silicone sheet. These sheets are generally used for small burns and keep the wound area from drying out too much. The added moisture will keep the collagen from filling in the wound.
Step 3
Massage the wound as it is beginning to heal. Health Med recommends massaging the open wound with your fingers several times a day. This massaging will help to break down collagen before it begins to form.
Step 4
Cover the wound with a bandage and keep it covered as much as possible. By keeping the wound out of the elements, you also help to speed up the healing process.
Step 5
Eat a healthy diet loaded with vitamins and cut out unhealthy habits, such as smoking or caffeine. The diet will help your body get the nutrients it needs for healing.
Tips and Warnings
- Sometimes the wound is too deep to prevent scarring, or your body is naturally prone to them. In this case, following these steps may minimize the effects of the scar, but not completely remove them. If this process does not work, speak to your doctor. In some cases, there are medical procedures which can be done, such as micro-dermabrasions, which can reduce the scar tissue.
