Hair loss is a relatively common problem among men, but also occurs among women and even children. The average person sheds between 50 and 100 hairs each day, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. Those who suffer from a hair loss disorder such as alopecia areata or pattern-baldness lose even more hair on a daily basis. Although your hair grows at a set rate of about six inches every year, you may be able to influence and encourage hair growth by using certain treatments and dietary changes. Always inform your doctor if you plan to take nutritional or herbal supplements.

Natural Oils

Massaging certain types of natural oils into your scalp may promote hair growth. Oils such as coconut, olive, almond or jojoba can provide your hair follicles and scalp with the nutrition and conditioning they need to maintain healthy hair growth. In his book, "Coconut Cures: Preventing and Treating Common Health Problems with Coconut," naturopathic doctor and certified nutritionist Bruce Fife says coconut oil may be one of the most beneficial oils for hair growth. He suggests massaging one to two tbsp of coconut oil to your scalp daily. You should leave this treatment on your hair for 30 to 60 minutes if possible, before washing out with shampoo.

Diet

A diet that is rich in certain nutrients may help to encourage healthy hair and hair growth, according to Vitamins-Nutrition.org. Eating foods rich in B-complex vitamins, beta-carotene, magnesium, sulfur and zinc is a beneficial way to promote hair health and growth from the inside out. Taking a supplement or a multivitamin that includes these nutrients may help you to meet your recommended daily allowance if you are not getting enough from your diet.

Essential Oils

Essential oils, which are extracted from certain types of plants, are commonly used in the practice of aromatherapy, a holistic art form that heals and promotes certain moods through the use of essential oils. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, some essential oils that may help to promote hair growth include sage, peppermint, rosemary and lavender. Diluting these oils in a carrier oil such as olive oil and massaging the mixture into your scalp may help to combat hair loss and encourage new hair growth.

Herbs

Although there is no scientific evidence that they actually work, certain herbs are used in herbal and traditional medicines to combat hair loss and promote hair growth. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, herbs such as milk thistle and ginkgo may help to combat disorders such as alopecia. Some herbalists also recommend their use for treating other forms of hair loss and encouraging new hair growth. Other herbs that are commonly used for hair growth include birch, licorice, aloe and saw palmetto.
