Yellow saffron, or Crocus sativus, originates in the area from Greece to Iran. Saffron flowers are harvested in autumn. Only the flower's three stigmas are collected for medicinal and culinary use, which makes the work very labor intensive and the spice very expensive. To make a saffron tea decoction for medicinal use, mix six to 10 saffron strands in 1 cup cold water, bring the mixture to a boil and let it simmer, according to "Acupuncture Today." Strain and drink the tea either warm or cold.

Women's Health

Yellow saffron tea is an effective spice for pregnant women during labor because the remedy increases the rate of contractions. Additionally, for women that menstruate, the tea helps alleviate cramps, supports healthy pelvic blood flow and treats severe cramping and hemorrhaging during the menstrual cycle, according to IndiaNetZone.com.

Alleviates Depression

Yellow saffron tea is known to alleviate depression. Shahin Akhondzadeh at the Roozbeh Psychiatric Hospital in the Tehran University of Medical Sciences has researched the spice as a treatment for depression, and it compares in effectiveness to Prozac, according to the Institute for Traditional Medicine.

Warning

Check a package of saffron thoroughly for additives and other indications that it may not be pure. Because of its high cost, saffron is often found in altered form, so package labeling should be examined carefully for additional ingredients.
