Alpine skiing takes place at lift-served areas and alpine skis are designed for all types of snow conditions and speeds. Skis are made of materials such as polyurethane foam and plastic. They come in many sizes and styles depending upon their use. Measuring for men's skis has evolved since the early 1990s and now takes into account how much ski experience he has. Men's skis differ from women's skis and in that they are less flexible and heavier in weight.
Step 1
Make a decision of what type of skier the man is. Does he feel more comfortable on green circle, blue square, black diamond, double black diamond or yellow triangle slopes? Green circle slopes are the beginning skier slopes. Blue squares mark the slopes for the intermediate skier. Black diamonds identify the slopes for the more advanced skier. Double black diamonds mark the most difficult slopes and yellow triangles label all-terrain or out-of-bounds ski slopes for the expert skiers.
Step 2
Measure the man's height in inches and multiply that measurement by 2.54 to convert to centimeters. For example, if his height is 72 inches multiplied by 2.54 equals 182.88 or rounded to 183 cm.
Step 3
Deduct 10 to 15 cm from his height measurement to obtain a ski length of 168 to 173 cm if he is a beginner or intermediate slope skier.
Step 4
Deduct 5 to 10 cm from his height measurement to obtain a ski length of 173 to 178 cm if he skis the black diamond or harder ski slopes.
