Deciding to have a baby is a major event in the lives of many women, and the process is usually fairly simple. However, sometimes fertility needs a bit of a boost. Conventional fertility treatment is an expensive process conducted by physicians, who use medications and advanced technology. Although you should consult a doctor and alternative treatments have not been proven, many women find it worthwhile to take herbs to try to boost their fertility.

Step 1

Try vitex, or chaste-tree berry. Vitex is an herb from the vitex agnus-castus tree, the berries of which have been used for hundreds of years to promote fertility. According to the website BabyHopes.com, vitex can help balance female hormones and promote ovulation and regular menstrual cycles. The website says that vitex might be especially helpful for women with polycystic ovarian syndrome, or PCOS. The herb should be taken either throughout the menstrual cycle or only in the first two weeks until ovulation.

Step 2

Take evening primrose oil to balance hormones. According to the website FertilityHelper.net, evening primrose oil might help your body make more fertile-quality cervical mucus, which can improve odds of conception. Evening primrose oil should be used only in the first half of the menstrual cycle, from menstruation to ovulation. The Fertility Helper website warns that evening primrose oil can cause contractions of the uterus, and that the herb should not be used by women who are nursing or suffer from schizophrenia or epilepsy.

Step 3

Take wild yam supplements after ovulation. Wild yam might help the body produce progesterone, which is necessary in early pregnancy. However, wild yam should never be used before ovulation when you are trying to conceive, as it could actually have a contraceptive effect, according to the Ovulation Calculator website.

Step 4

Try dong quai in the first half of your cycle, prior to ovulation. This Chinese herb is reported to have benefits on the female reproductive cycle, according to Fertility Helper. Dong quai reportedly balances estrogen activity and can restore normal cycles in women with irregular periods.
