Dark spots and patches on the skin commonly are caused by minor irritants such as shaving, allergic reaction to skin or hair care products or prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, usually acquired with age. However, there are some natural treatments that can help to reverse skin discolorations according to Julia Lawless, author of "The Encyclopedia of Essential Oils: The Complete Guide to the Use of Aromatic Oils in Aromatherapy, Herbalism, Health and Well-Being," and Marcel Lavabre, author of "Aromatherapy Workbook."
Oils Combination
Step 1
Combine 1/2 tsp. Cade essential oil, 1/2 tsp. Atlas cedar wood essential oil, 1/2 tsp. Juniper essential oil, 1/2 tsp. Lemon essential oil, 1/2 tsp. Mandarin essential oil, 1/2 tsp. Lemongrass essential oil, 1/2 tsp. Bergamot essential oil, 1/4 tsp. Rosemary essential oil, 1/4 tsp. Rose essential oil and 1 cup jojoba oil in a container with a tight-fitting lid.
Step 2
Cover the container and shake the contents to combine the essential oils and jojoba oil before first use.
Step 3
Pour 2 tsp. of the essential oil mixture onto a cotton pad. Allow the oil to soak in the cotton for 1 to 2 minutes.
Step 4
Dab the cotton pad on the area of skin being treated. Leave the essential oil mixture on your skin for 10 to 12 minutes.
Step 5
Rinse your skin with lukewarm water and wash with a gentle cleanser. Pat your skin dry with a clean towel and apply your regular moisturizer.
Step 6
Use this treatment twice per day in the morning and evening. Stop using the essential oil mixture if you notice any redness, swelling or other irritation.
Step 7
Store unused portions of the essential oil mixture in the refrigerator for 90 days. Throw the mixture away after 90 days if you have not used it all.
Tips and Warnings
- According to Susan Worwood, author of "Essential Aromatherapy: A Pocket Guide to Essential Oils and Aromatherapy," therapeutic-grade essential oils are best for skin ailments and hair care because they offer the greatest benefit to the end user, though they are often a bit more expensive. Therapeutic-grade essential oils can be found in most stores that sell essential oils or through specialty online retailers.
