Acne occurs around the mouth when the skin becomes blocked by sebum, the skin's natural oil. Hormone fluctuations, such as during adolescence or when entering menopause, can cause the oil glands to produce excess sebum. The P. acnes bacterium flourishes easily in this oil, resulting in inflamed red bumps on the skin. Although frustrating, there are many ways to remedy pimples around the mouth.

Step 1

Remove all dirt, makeup and oil from your face with a gentle, oil-free facial cleanser. Be sure to concentrate on the area around your mouth if you tend to get pimples there. The MedlinePlus website suggests washing only two times a day to prevent dryness and irritation.

Step 2

Apply an acne lotion or medication around the mouth to rid the skin of oil and bacteria. MayoClinic.com recommends products containing resorcinol, benzoyl peroxide, sulfur, lactic acid, salicylic acid or a combination of acetone and alcohol.

Step 3

Avoid greasy foods that can leave a film of oil around the mouth. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, these oils, especially vegetable oils, can exacerbate acne and even cause new pimples to crop up.

Step 4

Continue applying acne medication, even if you do not see results right away. The purpose of acne medication is to prevent new formations not just heal current blemishes. It can take up to eight weeks before you begin to notice less acne around the mouth. Completely clear skin can take even longer---up to six months.

Tips and Warnings

  • The American Academy of Dermatology discourages squeezing or popping pimples. Although this may seem like it will clear the skin faster, it can actually spread bacteria and make symptoms worse. As a result, permanent scarring or infection can occur.
  • Always consult a doctor before trying out a natural acne remedy. Some supplements can have serious side effects or interact with current medications.

Things You'll Need

  • Gentle face wash
  • Acne medication containing resorcinol, benzoyl peroxide, sulfur, lactic acid or salicylic acid
